Join us on this self-guided Heritage Trail tour to learn more about DC’s Greater U Street neighborhood, where a nationally
significant African American community flourished in the early 20th century. Discover the history of this area, which is celebrated
for nurturing renowned leaders in civil rights, law, science, and the arts. Meet up after the tour at historic Ben’s Chili Bowl for a bite.

Cultural Tour leader, Jane Freundel Levey, is a historian and writer specializing in the history of Washington, DC.  As Director of Heritage and Community Programs for the nonprofit Cultural Tourism DC, she is responsible for the city's neighborhood Heritage Trails, the award winning system of self-guided walking tours of DC neighborhoods developed in concert with the local communities.  Levey holds an M.A. in American Studies from George Washington University and a B.A. from Wellesley College.  She is a frequent speaker on DC history topics in lectures and in radio, TV, and film.  Among her writing credits is Washington Album:  A Pictorial History of the Nation's Capital co-authored with University of Chicago alumnus, Bob Levey, AB'66.
