At the next meeting, we will be discussing Considerations on the Causes of the Greatness of the Romans and their Decline by Montesquieu. Montesquieu's philosophy of history is that individual persons or events are of less importance than principle movements and general properties of human nature. From the editor's note of the Agora edition, translated by David Lowenthal: "The work has fallen into undue neglect: Napoleon admired it and recognized its Machiavellian roots. Through it can be seen the way in which the new political doctrines were transmitted from their origins and transformed on their way to the American founders and the French revolutionaries."

The 1965 David Lowenthal translation is available for free online: http://www.constitution.org/cm/ccgrd_l.htm

The Great Books Reading and Discussion Group normally meets on the fourth Monday of each month at the Agora restaurant.
