Great Books Reading and Discussion Group
The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire
Alumni meet monthly to discuss one of the classics of literature.

Cost: Free, apart from the cost of food & drink
No Registration Required
At the June meeting, we will be continuing our ongoing discussion of the great historical work, The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire by Edward Gibbon. This classic book, published in six volumes between 1776 and 1789, is to this day considered one of the standard references on the later history of the Roman Empire, east and west. Gibbon's research is accurate and his style is extremely readable. Since so much of Western Civilization derives from the Roman Empire, this history informs our politics, religion and literature, and Gibbon's work has influenced historians over two centuries.

AT this meeting we will discuss Volume IV, Chapters 37-46, covering roughly the time from the reign of Clovis I after the extinction of the Western Empire (~511 A.D.) to the siege of Constantinople by the Persians and Avars during the reign of Heraclius (~641 A.D.).

The Great Books Reading and Discussion Group normally meets on the fourth Monday of each month at the Agora Restaurant.
